OBERLIN -- Wesley G. Benda, 89, died Saturday (Oct. 17, 2009) in Kearney.
He was born Jan. 30, 1920, to Robert and Hazel (Hurst) Benda in Oberlin. He attended Achilles, District No. 14 and Decatur Community High School graduating in 1937. He then attended Kansas State University.
On June 12, 1944, he married Eulaine Erikson. They lived on farms in Rawlins County before moving to Oberlin. He was a farmer.
He was a member of the Herndon Covenant Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hazel Benda, son-in-law, Mitch Messerly; brother, John Benda and infant grandson, Nicholas Maresch.
Survivors include his wife, Eulaine of Oberlin; son, Gerald and wife, Patti Benda of Ludell; daughters, Connie and husband, Bob Smith of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Leanne and husband, Losson Pike of Ashland, Kan., Shirley and husband, Daryl Maresch of Nekoma, Kan., Beverly Messerly of Sublette, Kan., and Barbara and husband, Mark Olson of Oberlin; sisters, Esther Noren of Oberlin and Ida Marie and husband, David Erikson of Green Valley, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at Herndon Covenant Church in rural Herndon with the Rev. Keith Ruether officiating. Interment will be in the Herndon Covenant Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin and Thursday from 8 a.m. until time of services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the church or Gideons International.
