HAMLET -- Mildred P. Stretch died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Community Hospital in McCook at the age of 80.
She was born April 1, 1929, on the family farm in Rawlins County, south of Stratton. She was the daughter of the late Sherman and Flossie (Hoover) Spears. She grew up on the farm until the eighth grade when the family moved to Stratton, where she graduated from Stratton High School in 1946.
She began working in the office of Dr. Harris at Stratton. On June 18, 1950, Mildred married Leslie Stretch in Stratton. They made their home at Wauneta, where she worked in the local clothing store, before moving to the farm in 1953, north of Hamlet in Hayes County.
She was a community news reporter for the Wauneta Breeze Newspaper and the Hitchcock County News. For many years she taught Sunday school at the Hamlet Union Church at Hamlet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William, Glen, Lester, Elmer, Charles and Melvin Spears, an infant brother; and two sisters, Margaret Spears and Laura Belle Jameson and husband, Ralph.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Leslie Stretch of Hamlet; two sons, Les Dwayne Stretch of North Platte and Eddie Stretch and fiancee, Michelle of Imperial; two granddaughters, Michele and Melinda; two brothers, Bob Spears and wife, Joan of Boonville, Calif., and Eldon Spears and wife, Donna of Arvada, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Vernice Spears and Mable Spears; and relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. (MT) Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Church of Christ in Wauneta with Randy Hayes officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta.
Memorials may be given in her name and visitation will be from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook.
