PALISADE -- Virginia Alice Hopkins, 96, died Sunday (Sept. 6, 2009) at Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial.

She was born Feb. 26, 1913, to William Munson and Flossie Sophia (Spencer) Gettys near New Castle, Wyo. She moved with her family to a farm near Bayard during World War I, where she attended first grade. The family moved back to New Castle and she continued her education. After several years the family moved to Nebraska and settled on a farm south of Grainton near her grandparents and then on to Elsie, where she attended high school.

On Aug. 27, 1930, she married Oren Hopkins at Holyoke, Colo. They moved to a farm north of Wauneta. They then moved to the Grosbach farm east of Wauneta in 1937. In 1959, they bought a farm north of Wauneta on Spring Creek where they farmed until their retirement. They moved to Palisade in 1980.

She was baptized as an infant in New Castle Methodist Church, confirmed in the Grainton Methodist Church and joined the Wauneta Methodist Church, when they moved to Wauneta. She was a member of the USCS, Circle, Eastern Star and Kensington, PTA, Federated Women's Club and Job's Daughters. She also assisted with a thrift shop

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin brothers; husband, Oren in August of 1996; daughter, Joyce Einspahr and husband, Dennis; sister, Elsie Rodgers and husband, Wilbur; brothers-in-law, Richard Hopkins and wife, Norma, Bernard, Leland, Lloyd and Harold; and son-in-law, Charles Wilson.

Survivors include her daughters, Yvonne Wilson of Denver, Colo., Patricia McLeod of Seattle, Wash., and Eleanor Muths and husband, Jerome of Palisade; sister, Shirley Schack and husband, Gene of Denver, Colo.; brother-in-law, Earl Hopkins of Farnam; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Friday, 2 p.m., (MT) at Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta with the Rev. Kay Alnor officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2 - 6 p.m., (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home in Wauneta.

A memorial has been established in her memory.
