ARAPAHOE -- William P. Swanson, 93, of Arapahoe, formerly of Cambridge, died Tuesday (Aug. 18, 2009) at C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.
He was born May 28, 1916, on the family farm southeast of Cambridge to William and Hilda O. (Simpson) Swanson. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1937.
After high school, he moved with family to Oregon. He married Edith Clara Martin in Yakima, Wash. After a few year of working in Oregon, they moved to the Swanson family farm southeast of Cambridge in 1940, to farm and raise cattle. The family was the first to drill an irrigation well in the Furnas County area.
For several years, he worked as an Amzoil and motorcycle dealer. In 2004, they moved to the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Arapahoe and later to the nursing home. On Nov. 24, 2005, his wife died.
In 1973, he received the Pioneer Farm Family Award for the family homestead being in the family for more than 100 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith; sister, Ada Swanson; brother, Perry Swanson; and brothers-in-law, Wendell and Wayne Martin/
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Dale and wife, Kay Martin of San Manuel, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Margery Hoagland of Wichita, Kan., and Jean Arington of Kittitas, Wash.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe with Vicar James Moshier officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Cambridge.
