W Design and Associates was chosen to do engineering work for improvement projects at the McCook airport, through 2013.

As part of the a consent agenda, the McCook City Council Monday night approved the recommendation of W Design, given by the city staff committee of City Manager Kurt Fritsch, Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff and Airport Maintenance operator Ken Vontz.

The airport improvement projects are federally-funded and require the selection of an engineer.

The agreement is for engineering work that does not exceed $100,000.

The city sent out a request for qualifications to nine engineering firms and received responses from three, with one stating that due to their workload, they would be unable to participate. W Design and Airport Development Group submitted their qualifications and both were interviewed over the phone and references were contacted.

W Design and Associates have been the engineer for various projects in the city and since 1983, for various projects at the McCook airport. They have also worked on capital improvement projects on other area airports.

In another consent agenda item concerning the airport, the council approved an supplemental agreement with U.S. Services General Administration (GSA) to set the date of July 8 to lease an additional 180 square feet at the McCook airport for the Transportation Security Administration. The TSA already leases 788 feet at the airport and with this additional space, will pay the city a total of $25,000 yearly.
