OBERLIN -- Howard E. Votapka, 82, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 2009) at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid, Okla.
He was born May 27, 1927, in Oberlin to Guy and Helen (Vermillion) Votapka. He grew up on the family farm north of Oberlin and attended Oberlin Elementary School. He graduated from Decatur County High School in 1945.
He entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After his service he returned to Oberlin. On Aug. 3, 1958, he married Janette Nelson in Oberlin. They lived on a farm north of Oberlin where he was a farmer.
He was a member of the United Church of Oberlin, Fair Board, Extension Council and Odd Fellows Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Mary Lou and three brothers, John, Chuck and Dale Votapka.
Survivors include his wife, Janette Votapka of Oberlin; sons, Ward and wife, Jody Votapka of Oberlin; daughters, Donna and husband, Lynn Groneweg and Lynda and husband, Glenn Mueller, all of Enid, Okla.; sisters, Faye Meitl of Oberlin and Norma Anderson of Oberlin; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, 10 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home of Oberlin with the Rev. Judi Stricker officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m., until time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given in his name.
