Stop signs and red flags restrict traffic on a 70-some-year-old steel bridge across the Beaver Creek on Road 383 east of Marion. The Nebraska Department of Roads closed the bridge until the county makes repairs or other plans for safe travel over the creek. Marion-area resident Cecil Lafferty remembers that an original wooden bridge was replaced by this steel bridge -- possibly a bridge taken from a location on the state's highway system, roads superintendent Gary Dicenta said -- after major flooding in 1935. The single-lane bridge is 40 feet long. It's 12 feet from the bridge deck to the creek bottom. (Connie Jo Discoe/McCook Daily Gazette)
