SHELBY -- Janet G. (Crook) O'Brien, 70, of Shelby, died Monday (July 6, 2009) at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln.

She was born April 10, 1939, to Basil and Bernice (Humphreys) Crook in Benkelman. The family lived in Benkelman and moved to McCook in 1951, where she graduated high school in 1957.

On May 31, 1958, she married John O'Brien at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook. The family lived in Cambridge for six years before moving to Lincoln where they lived for two years. In 1965, they moved to Shelby. She was employed at Osceola Good Samaritan starting as a CNA, then she worked in Physical Therapy and finally as Social Services Director. She retired in 2001, after 25 years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Anne's Guild and Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Shelby Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Basil and Bernice Crook.

Survivors include her husband, John O'Brien of Shelby; two daughters, Deb and husband, Craig Saum of Gothenburg and Teresa and husband, Mike Davis of Yutan; two sons, Michael and wife, Sue O'Brien of Norfolk and Pat and wife, Julie O'Brien of Lincoln; brothers, Keith and wife, Bernice A. Crook of Minneapolis, Minn., and Larry and wife, Jan Crook of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Betty and husband, Deane Thomson of Kent, Wash.; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with the Rev. John Rooney officiating. Inurnment will be in the Shelby Catholic Cemetery.

Rosary will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
