Nokes is Crawford's all-around cowboy; Hageman claims steer wrestling

Tuesday, July 7, 2009
CRAWFORD -- Garrett Nokes of McCook was the all-around cowboy at the 63rd annual Old West Trail Rodeo in Crawford during the Fourth of July weekend.

Nokes won the tie down roping with a time of 10.9 seconds to earn $1,102. He also competed in the steer wrestling, but did not score in it.

The steer wrestling was won by another McCook cowboy, Brady Hageman, who flipped his steer in 5.4 seconds Saturday night. Second in the event went to Brett Gumb of Burwell whose time was 6.5 seconds. Gumb also is a running back for the Chadron State College football team.

Gumb, who also was entered in the team roping, was the runner-up in the all-around standings. He won $729.60.

A 2006 CSC graduate, Brittney Fleck of Mandan, N.D., won the barrel race at the Crawford rodeo for the second year in a row. Her time was 18.16 seconds.

Because of heavy rains in Crawford late last week, there was water standing in the arena at times. The goo definitely slowed things down in the timed events, but the arena's sandy base kept it from being slippery and there were no mishaps that could be blamed on the weather.

There were 28 entries in each of the events, topped by 88 in the team roping.
