STRATTON -- Arletta Marie Hunkins, 86, went home to be with her Lord on July 4, 2009, at El Dorado Manor in Trenton.

She was born to Edward J. and Anna W. (Ahlert) Wittwer on Feb. 13, 1923, in Hayes County. She was baptized April 1, 1923, at Black Wood Country Church and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith. 

In October of 1928, she started school in rural Hayes County and graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1940. She attended a two-year nursing course at Stratton and graduated in 1943.

On May 10, 1950, she was united in marriage to Clyde Melvin Hunkins at the Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. They made their home in Stratton. To this union five sons were born.

Arletta enjoyed attending church and spending time with her family and friends. She worked 12 years as a nurse and sold Avon.

She enjoyed cake decorating, large gardens and painting. Arletta was a member of the Stratton MGR club since 1950, St. John's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in Culbertson, and a lifetime member of the American Auxiliary in Stratton. She also served on the Stratton Ambulance Crew. She will be remembered for her beautiful flowers in her yard that she loved to grow. Also for her cakes, that she took pride in baking and decorating for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Anna; her husband of 50 years, Clyde; three grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason and Jennifer; one great-great-granddaughter, Cassandra; one sister Leona Lawson; one brother, Art Wittwer; niece Charlotte and nephew Kirwin.

Survivors include her five sons, Gary and wife, Jeanne and Donald and wife, Linda, all of Trenton, David and wife, Maria, James and Kenneth, all of Lincoln; sisters, Leola Alberts of Palisade and Gladys and husband, Bob Brandt of Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Winston Hunkins of Stratton; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name to KNGN Radio Station.

Services will be Tuesday, July 7, 2009, 11 a.m. at St John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson with Pastor Bradley Rick officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton at 2 p.m.
