Boy Scout Trenton Klimper wants to construct the memorial as his Eagle Scout project. The McCook City Council gave its preliminary approval in May for Klimper to proceed with his idea.
The council will also be asked to approve several other items, including the consent agenda item that raises the rates insurance companies will pay for ambulance service operated by the city. Consent agenda items can be approved in one motion or pulled for discussion by a member of the council or a member of the public.
Other consent agenda items include an update on the status of a grant funded by economic stimulus funds, that the city hopes to receive in constructing a new fire station and the confirmation of another grant for $72,993 that the city has received for a new baler at the McCook Recycling Center.
Regular agenda items up for the council's approval include:
* introduce and approve on first reading an amended city ordinance to establish the speed limit at 25 mph on East H Street from the 900 to 1200 blocks
* authorize the mayor to convene the McCook Board of Health for the inspection of several properties for safety and nuisance violation codes, including those at 1303 East B, 508 E. Second, 307 E. First and 309 East 12th.
* declare the residence at 1312 West 12 a nuisance property due to neglect and disrepair.
Also at Monday's meeting, the council will get its first look at the preliminary 2009/10 city budget. with another budget workshop scheduled for Monday, July 13.

HELLO!!!! There has been an overlooked property in the city. On the corner of Hiway 83 and South Street on the southwest corner. The former McCook recycling center. It needs to be addressed now. Has any of the citizens looked at this when going south out of town or going to Barnett Park???? It is run down and in very bad disrepair. The yellow house on 2nd street isn't as bad as this place.
It is only fair that this property be inspected with the others. Or is it invisible and no one sees it?????
There are many properties in this town that need to be looked at, at least they are doing something about the problem, instead of sticking their head in the sand. If you have a concern file a complaint with the city offices. Seems like they are taking it one step at a time, trying to do it right, and not getting in over their head. I like the fact that something is finally being done even if it seems too slow.
God knows that the 25 mile speed limet will save lots of maintenance on local cars from the poorly maintained streets of mccook.. coming from out of town and bouncing on the poorly maintained city streets, 25 is a great idea.. I sometimes wished my mercerdes was a jeep when I visit mccook..
