Council adds Nelson name to airport, pending FAA approval

Tuesday, June 16, 2009
After failing to get off the ground with the McCook Airport Advisory Board, the proposal to rename the city's airport after Sen. Ben Nelson was approved by the McCook City Council on a 3 to 1 vote.

At the regular meeting Monday night, Councilman Aaron Kircher cast the lone vote against the name change while Mayor Dennis Berry and council members Colleen Grant and Lonnie Anderson voted in favor of it. Councilman Jack Rogers was absent.

After approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport will be renamed from McCook Regional Airport to McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport.

The council meeting was moved from City Council Chambers to Memorial Auditorium to accommodate an individual in a wheelchair and the crowd of about 30.

Sen. Nelson, born and raised in McCook, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. Before that, he served as Nebraska's governor from 1991 to 1999.

Councilman Aaron Kircher said he was concerned that an airport named after Nelson could be a liability for the senator, used as a possible political tool against him in Washington. Although he agreed that Nelson had done good things for McCook, Councilman Kircher said there were legitimate risks and that he could not "consciously risk our funding" or make it harder for Sen. Nelson to support the airport.

"I have to put McCook's interest before recognizing a senator," he said. Kircher also questioned city funding for the name change, such as signs, and why the council was taking up the issue when there was no recommendation from the Airport Advisory Board.

Mayor Berry said he understood Kircher's reasoning, but noted that renaming the airport has become a community issue and as such the council needed to address it.

The council received about 50 letters of support from individuals, business owners and community leaders who supported naming the airport after Nelson, including those from the McCook Economic Development Corp., Pete Graff of McCook National Bank, Van Korell of AmFirst Bank, Jim Ulrich of Community Hospital, former Nebraska Sen. Tom Baker and publisher Shary Skiles of the McCook Daily Gazette.

The issue to rename McCook Regional Airport after Nelson was initially taken up by the Airport Advisory Board in 2007, by a request from Mayor Dennis Berry.

The issue failed to get any traction and no recommendation was given. This year, a committee of McCook citizens again brought the idea to the Airport Advisory Board but the issue was tabled at the first meeting and the committee pulled the proposal from consideration at the second meeting, due to some on the board who opposed it.

Kircher also asked if the senator was aware of the proposal. Steve Batty, a member of the citizen committee that recommended renaming the airport, said Nelson was informed of it.

Council member Colleen Grant conceded that the city could name a street or building after the senator, as suggested by several who addressed the council before the vote. But she added, "It's the least we could do, but why do the least?"

Several spoke against the proposal, but the majority of those present Monday night spoke in favor of recognizing Nelson.

Those against the proposal included former councilman and commissioner Dick Trail, who questioned why the airport should be named for Nelson and not other structures or streets. Ken Allen, a member of the Airport Advisory Board, inquired as to the point of having an advisory board if it wasn't taken into consideration in matters relating to the airport. Mike Nielsen, another Airport Advisory Board member, said he supported the concept but the name change would confuse pilots and that most people would refer to it as the McCook Airport anyway.

Chairman of the Airport Advisory Board Doug Vap also spoke up and said most airfields and not airports are named in recognition and asked that the item be referred back to the board for consideration.

Committee members who advocated the name change also spoke and emphasized the contributions Nelson has made for Nebraska in general and McCook in particular.

This included Nelson's commitment to essential air service funding to keep small rural airports open, including McCook's airport, the Work Ethic Camp, Valmont, 21st Century and other projects Nelson was instrumental in obtaining for the city.

"He's a hometown boy who has done right by us," said committee member Steve Batty. "He has been good for McCook and McCook has been good for him."

He added that the airport would still be identified by "MCK" and Linda Taylor noted that although the council has access to advisory boards, it can still act independently of them.

Jerda Garey said aviation leaders in McCook should be recognized in some way, be it a Wall of Fame or renaming a street in honor of them. But Nelson is a U.S. Senator and a former governor and deserves special recognition, she said.

"It's not about politics, it's not about future decisions of Ben Nelson, it's saying thank you while he is still alive and being appreciated," Garey told the council.

Also speaking in favor of the name change was Jim Phinney, McCook Public Power District general manager. Phinney recalled that after a severe ice storm in 1994, then-Gov. Nelson had provided a helicopter so the system could be surveyed and obtained federal funding for McCook and two other public power districts.

Phinney said he wanted to mention this as an example of the good things Nelson has done that are not known to many Nebraskans.

"I owe him a debt of gratitude," Phinney said.

You guys have got to be kidding. I think I would call this "Sucking up for Dollars." I don't know what else to call it other than McCook, or should I say McBenNelsonCook, must be kissing some senator tail for stimulus money.

What is this going to cost me, Justin Tax Payer, to relogo and rename everything that says McCook Regiounal Airport.

You know, there are a lot of people that have done a lot for the city of McCook. People from all walks of life. How about the McCook tax payer?

I'm not trying to discredit what Ben Nelson has done, but at what point do we need to look at whether supporting him comes down to just looking out for McCook only, or for our own country and state as well.

It just looks to me that our city council once again rushed to do their own thing against the opinion of other people...like the advisory board. Sounds just like buying the old airbase.

Maybe we should have renamed a steet after him somewhere, that's still more than anyone else in McCook ever gets.

I still think it comes back to sucking up for dollars. Congrats again to Aaron Kircher for going against the good old boy flow of politics as usual in McCook.

Way to go Aaron and also kudos to Dick also for speaking up. This is nothing more than a bunch of behind kissing. Senator Nelson hasn't done anymore and maybe not as much as any other senator does for his state and home. Now if his name was Byrd I might understand it. Name a street after him and leave the airport alone, it belongs to all of the good people of McCook and surrounding area, I will always call it McCook.

Thank you to Aaron Kircher. You are the future, and I have to say "Thank God" you have not followed in the footsteps of others on the council.

I could not be at the meeting Monday night as I would not have hesitated to speak up, not that I believe it would have done any good as I believe minds were made up before the meeting. I believe this was a HUGE waste of tax payers' dollars, and the reasons are just what Justin76 pointed out.

I have to say I laughed at the comments made by some "has beens". Linda Taylor, "who noted that although the council has access to advisory boards, it can still act independently of them." This is probably a good reason why Linda is no longer in a position on the council, and I would bet no place in the future for her either. How much did your lousy decisions cost the city?

In my opinion, the city council needs to concentrate and pay attention to what the people want, and not make all these knee jerk, split second decisions, thinking they are going to get instant gratification, then go on to another project that spends our money. Any homeowner knows that there is UPKEEP to your property. Let's focus on that. You do not need to spend a large amount on upkeep. Maintain what we have, and fix it up. Make property owners clean up there unsightly lots. Mow down the weeds along the streets, there is a lot that could be done. Fix the broken fountain at Barnett Park, etc. Put up a NICE big flag again at Karrer Park (like there used to be).

Thank you to the advisory board who has a thankless job, and apparently no valued opinion to several of the city council members.

I do appreciate the fact that Ben Nelson is from McCook, etc.. we have many people that make contributions to the community and I don't see them having a building, street or something "named" after them! I guess on the next city council agenda we could ask the city council to rename the McCook Public Safety Center, after all who deserves it more than those men/women that have worked for the city for years, volunteered for years, they get up in the middle of the night to save a life, put out a fire, etc and put their lives on the line.... for us.

Get my point?

Changing the name of the airport is a big mistake. It will be costly for the Feds, the State and McCook loses it's aeronautical identity.

There is a reason that the Airport Advisory Board didn't approve this. Ask a pilot, ask someone that is involved in aviation...look at how other towns have named their air fields to honor someone. Then make a decision. Once that is done, then you can go back and correct this mistake that has been made.

It seems that the most petty things in McCook seem to really stir the pot. I take honor in calling McCook home but every time I get on here and read the petty crap that people are arguing about it just makes me wonder. I don't really have an opinion on the renaming the airport. I do agree that Ben Nelson has done a lot for McCook and should be recognized for it the same as Norris, Felling, Weiland, Kelly, Karrer, the list goes on. I also felt that the comments of Mr. Trail in his story telling weekly opinion was in poor taste with some of the comments about Norris being "dead", etc. But, where would we be without good ole, Dick, right? I guess one final question or comment. I question that if people feel so strongly about this issue, or any other issues that joe taxpayer has concerns or questions about, do they show up at the meetings and get the information or are they happier just waiting for decisions to be made so they can come in here and whine about em? Just wondering.
