McCook Junior B Red team sweeps Cambridge, Indianola

The McCook American Legion Junior B Red baseball team defeated Cambridge 7-6 and Indianola 4-2 Thursday night at Jaycee Sports Complex in McCook.

McCook rallied to beat Cambridge in the first game.

"This game was similar in some ways to the Tuesday night game when Cambridge played McCook Blue," said McCook coach Greg Larson.

"The weather conditions were near perfect for a baseball game and the field conditions were great and the winner was not decided until the last inning."

Cambridge got on the board first when Kaden Huxall drew a walk and was able to score on Zane Petersen's fly ball to right.

In the bottom half the first inning, McCook sent 10 batters to the plate and by using a combination of walks and defensive errors were able to score five runs and take an early 5-1 lead.

Cambridge was unable to score in the second. McCook's Gavin Harsh had a lead-off walk in the second and stole his way home for the only score in the inning pushing the lead to 6-1.

Cambridge loaded the bases in the third inning and scored three times trimming the score to 6-4. McCook also had the bases loaded in their half but was not able to score.

In the fourth, Cambridge got the lead-off man on and he scored on a throwing error by McCook and pulled within one run while holding McCook scoreless. In the fifth, Cambridge again loads the bases and scores one run.

McCook was able to get a double play in the inning that went from shortstop to catcher to third to second to stop Cambridge's rally. Going into the sixth, the game was tied at 6-6.

Cambridge was able to get a runner on but could not get him home. McCook's Lucas Post got a one out double and stole third and scored on Clayton Korus game winning single.

Cameron Burkey pitched his second complete game of the season, picking up his second win.

Lucas Post doubled. Clayton Korus, Keegan Williams, Gavin Harsh and Cameron Burkey all had singles.

In the nightcap, Indianola came to town for a make-up game that was rained out on Tuesday.

Justin Malleck reached on an error to start the second inning.

He showed his speed on the base paths when he stole home on a pick off play at third base to put Indianola ahead 1-0.

McCook was held scoreless in the second.

Indianola scored another run in the third to make the score 2-0.

Again McCook was held scoreless.

Indianola was able to out a few runners on in the fourth but produced no runs.

Cody Wutdke got McCook going in the fourth with a lead-off single followed by Chris Hoffman and Cade Hiatt singles.

Wutdke scored on Hiatt's single. James Kain run batted in scored Hoffman and Hiatt stole home on a throwing error. McCook took a 3-2 lead.

In the fifth, Indianola got the first two batters on base but could not advance them.

Gavin Harsh drew a walk and stole three bases to give to make the score 4-2.

Indianola came to bat in the sixth and could not get past first.

McCook held on to win its ninth game of the season 4-2.

Drew Bredvick pitched his second complete game and picked up his third win of the season.

Cody Wutdke two singles. Gavin Harsh, Chris Hoffman, Cade Hiatt and James Kain all singled.

McCook will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Gothenburg on Sunday at home and travels to Imperial on Monday for a doubleheader.
