HERNDON -- Denis W. Tongish, 84, died, Tuesday (June 2, 2009) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kan.
He was born April 24, 1925, in Herndon to John and Mary (Hutfles) Tongish. He grew up on the family farm, attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Herndon High School in 1943.
On Sept. 28, 1948, he married Wilma Kompus. They made their home on a farm southeast of Herndon. He was a farmer. He retired in 1990 and they moved to Herndon. His wife died in 2004 and he moved to Newton in 2006.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Oberlin American Legion and McCook Elks Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; wife, Wilma; and brothers Elmer and infant, Melvin.
Survivors include his children, June Tongish of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dave Tongish and wife, Pat of Newton, Joe Tongish and wife, Becky of Topeka, Kan., Jim Tongish and wife, Amy of Newton, Dawn Tongish and husband, Eduardo of Grapevine, Texas and Dee Davis and husband, Wayne of Lenexa, Kan.; brother, Marion Tongish and wife, Ronnie of Denver, Colo.; and 14 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Daniel Scheetz officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery at Herndon.
Visitation will be Sunday from 6-8:30 p.m., and Monday from 9 a.m., until time of service on Monday at the church. A parish vigil and rosary will be Sunday at 7 p.m., at the church.
Memorials may be given in his name.
