Golfer asks city to help revive Broken Tee

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

A McCook resident asked the McCook City Council to look into the possibility of re-opening the Broken Tee golf course on East Seventh.

Gene E. Morris, who moved here four years ago, spoke to the council at the beginning of the regular meeting Monday night and asked that the city consider operating the Broken Tee, that was closed last year.

The course was on the 900 block of East Seventh, near the Republican River Valley Event Center.

Morris said the city is still maintaining and watering the grass at the course, that was used extensively by senior citizens and others who could not afford the fees or navigate the steep terrain at the other golf course in town.

The Broken Tee worked well for senior citizens, handicapped individuals and children as it was only nine holes and the topography wasn't as taxing, he said

"It was a vital part of the community and needed," Morris stated, as not everyone can afford the larger golf course.

The city operates other recreational sites that do not generate revenue, Morris said, such as city parks, the walking trail and playground equipment. Currently, some golfers are going to courses in Oberlin, Curtis or Trenton, when "we could keep those golfers here," he said.

Morris asked that the city work with owner Perry Case in re-opening the course and to look into funding options, such as grants, to "'do what it needs to do."

The council took no action as the issue wasn't on the city's agenda.

  • The Broken Tee course should be opened again. I would be on that course if it were. Not everyone can afford Heritage Hills. I sure can't.
