Cornhusker State Games Torch Run making stop in McCook

Tuesday, May 26, 2009
The Cornhusker State Games Torch Run, sponsored by the Nebraska National Guard and Air Guard, will be running its way through McCook and more than 24 other Nebraska towns beginning Saturday.

The Torch Run is the kick-off to one of the largest amateur sports festivals in the nation, The Cornhusker State Games.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the games, and nearly 15,000 participants are expected in the 63 sports.

The torch will leave Sidney the morning of June 5, and will be traveling through Ogallala and Imperial over the weekend. The torch will arrive in McCook on June 7 at approximately 4 p.m. for an arrival celebration at the YMCA, 901 W E St.

The public is invited to attend the celebration to cheer on local runners and get an update from Cornhusker State Games officials.

The Torch Run will cover more than 1,200 miles and involve approximately 1,000 runners and volunteers.

At each running site the Nebraska Army National Guard and Air Guard will be hosting their Nebraska Army National Guard Football Throw Challenge.

Nebraska citizens of all ages and athletic abilities may register to carry the torch by May 25.

To register call 1-800-30-GAMES or visit CornhuskerStateGames.com.
