BENKELMAN -- Idabelle (Smith) Harper, 94, died Thursday (May 21, 2009) at Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman.
She was born April 3, 1915, in Rawlins County to Clarence Demby and Lena Mae (Blakeley) Smith. She grew up on the farm in Kansas and graduated from McDonald High School.
On Oct. 7, 1934, she married George W. Harper of Benkelman. They spent most of their married life on their farm south of Max.
She embraced the gospel along with her husband, and her mother, Lena Smith, in 1936 and remained faithful to God the rest of her life. In 1998, after suffering the effects of a stroke, she moved to Sarah Ann Hester Memorial home in Benkelman, where she resided until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lena Mae Smith; husband, George Harper; son, Lester; daughter, Lenere; and two brothers.
She is survived by her sons, Demby Harper and wife, Norma of Benkelman, Dennis Harper and wife, Verna of Elma, Wash., and Leon Harper and wife, Diane of Bivins, Texas; daughter-in-law, Ethel Morton and husband, Russ of Ontario, Canada; son-in-law, Earnest Walker and wife, Sharon of Wasilla, Ark.; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Forch Funeral Home Chapel in Benkelman. Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral chapel today from 1 - 6 p.m. (MDT).
A memorial has been established in her name.
