Region ready to honor those who gave their all

McCook American Legion Post No. 203 plans Memorial Day services Monday, at 10:30 a.m., at the Veterans' Memorial Monument in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

The public is encouraged to attend this brief yet honorable Memorial Day service.

Originally known as "Decoration Day," a day to decorate veterans' and family graves, Memorial Day has grown to encompass also a time to recount the sacrifice of all American soldiers, to honor the memory of America's fighting men and women who have died defending their country and to honor family heritage.

Other Memorial Day services throughout the Golden Plains are:

Atwood -- Sam Hubbard Post No. 46 plans services at 10 a.m., Monday, at Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. Don White delivering the address.

Herndon -- VFW Post No. 1368 Commander Chris Niermeier will be the speaker for services Monday, at 3 p.m., at the VFW Hall.

McDonald -- The Chester Phipps Post of the American Legion plans services at 10 a.m., at McDonald Cemetery.

Maywood -- Memorial Day services at the Maywood Cemetery, Monday, at 11 a.m., followed by the 77th annual Memorial Day dinner at the Maywood Community Hall.

Cambridge -- Memorial Day services at 10 a.m., Monday, at Fairview Cemetery.

Trenton -- The VFW plans services Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Palisade -- Monday, 10 a.m., Palisade Cemetery.

Hamlet -- Monday, 11 a.m., Hamlet Cemetery.

Culbertson -- Monday, 10 a.m., Culbertson Cemetery. Immediately following the service, the Adam Miller Unit No. 133 American Legion Auxiliary will serve a luncheon of jiffy burgers, ham sandwiches and a variety of desserts for a free will offering at Barger's Tumbleweed.

* Stratton -- Memorial Days services Monday, at 9:30 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Hall, followed by dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Indianola -- The Indianola American Legion Post plans Memorial Day services at Indianola Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., Monday.

Lebanon -- On Sunday, at 11 a.m., the Lebanon American Legion and the Beaver Valley VFW plan military memorial services at the Lyle Cemetery. On Monday, the two groups will conduct services at the Tyrone Cemetery at 10 a.m. and at the Lebanon Cemetery at 11 a.m.

The Beaver Valley VFW Auxiliary will serve the traditional Memorial Day dinner at the hall in Lebanon following services at the Lebanon Cemetery.

Norcatur -- On Sunday, the "Avenue of Flags" will be placed at 7 a.m. At 1:30 p.m., the Memorial Day parade will start in front of the bank downtown and end for Memorial Day services at 2 p.m., at the Norcatur Cemetery.

Jennings -- The Jennings American Legion will conduct Memorial Day services at 10 a.m., Monday.

Imperial -- Memorial Day services are planned near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Mount Hope Cemetery, Monday, at 10:30 a.m. MT.

Wauneta -- The Wauneta American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and the VFW plan services at Eden Cemetery Monday at 9 a.m. MT, followed by St. Paul's Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. MT.

At 10:30 a.m. MT, the program begins at Wauneta's Riverside Cemetery, after which the Auxiliary will serve its annual Memorial Day lunch at the Legion Hall in Wauneta, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m MT.
