Three area girls teams bring home district track crowns

Three Southwest Nebraska area girls track teams were crowned champions in their district meets Thursday -- McCook in B-6, Southern Valley in C-10 and Perkins County in C-11.

The McCook Bison girls won the Nebraska Class B-6 district title at Gothenburg with 104 points, edging out runnerup Gothenburg by 5 points.

McCook qualified 11 girls for state in 10 events.

The McCook boys finished third with 70 points in B-6. Ogallala won the title with 100 points, followed by Gothenburg with 85.

The Southern Valley girls won the Class C-10 district title at Arapahoe in a battle with cambridge and Dundy County-Stratton. Southern Valley scored 95.5 points, Cambridge 85.5 and Dundy County-Stratton 85.

Southwest was sixth with 64 points, followed by Arapahoe with 37.

The Cambridge boys finished third in C-10 with 76.5 points, followed by DCS in fifth with 59.5, Arapahoe in sixth with 59, Southern Valley eighth with 37 and Southwest ninth with 30.

Sutherland won the C-10 boys title with 87.5 points, followed by North Platte-St. Patrick's with 78.5.

The Perkins County girls claimed the Class C-11 district championship at Bayard with 92.5 points.

Chase County-Imperial's girls placed eighth with 35 points.

In the boys division, Perkins County placed fourth with 77 points and Chase County sixth with 43.5 points.

The Nebraska State Activities Association state track meet is May 22-23 at Omaha's Burke Stadium.

Class B-6 at Gothenburg

The Bison girls claimed five first-place finishes en route to the team title.

The top three field event performers, top four running event winners and top two relays (and the next four fastest times out of all districts) qualified for state.

Sophomore Jessa Sughroue won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.3 seconds and the 800 in 2 minutes, 22.4 seconds.

The Bison 1600-meter relay team of Whitney Korgan, Tara Powell, Joanna Bryant and Sughroue finished first with a season-best time of 4:06.1.

Senior Danae McCorkle posted a school record and personal record mark of 11 feet, 1/2 inch to win the girls pole vault. Teammate Jayde Aufrecht was second with a mark of 10 feet.

Korgan finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.9 (equaling her season-best) and second in the 100 in 12.7.

Sughroue also anchored the second-place 3200-meter relay team, which posted a season-best time of 9:50.

Also on the relay team were Emilyne Nichols, Kelsea Geschwentner and Powell.

The 400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 52 seconds. The relay consisted of Kali Lyons, Powell, Megan Skiles and Korgan.

Shelby Woitaszewski placed second in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.8.

Powell was third in the long jump with a mark of 15-7 1/2.

Not qualifying for state but placing at districts were Gretchen Sehnert, fifth, triple jump, 32-8 and sixth, long jump, 14-10; Sydney Jumps, fifth, shot put, 36-7 3/4; Emily Tolliver, sixth, 3200, 13:06.5; Kelsey Pohl, sixth, pole vault, 9-0; Erin Premer, fifth, discus, 111-9; and Morgan Chitwood, sixth, discus, 108-6.

Geschwentner posted a time of 5:47.9 in the 1600 but did not place.

"For the McCook girls, it turned out be the ultimate experience in team track and field," said McCook girls track coach Steve Clapp.

"For the second year in a row, the McCook girls performed at or near the top of their ability in capturing the team title.

"From top to bottom, almost every athlete had a season best and were very close to their best.

"We had solid to extreme performances from our veteran athletes and exceptional performances from some of our athletes that had never exceled at the level they experienced on Thursday.

"We ended up needing all of our team points in capturing the team title in the 11-team B-6 district. We look forward to competing against the state's best athletes."

In the boys division, McCook's Mark Nichols won the triple jump with a mark of 45 feet, 3/4 of an inch, which placed him in the school's all-time Top 10.

The McCook boys 400-meter relay team of Andy Smith, Dillon Goltl, Matt Berry and Tyrone Sellers placed second with a time of 44.0 seconds.

The 1600-meter relay team of Goltl, Ryan Hardin, Cody Goltl and Berry placed third with a time of 3:29.5.

The 3200-meter relay team of Jimmy Barron, Ryan Powell, Spencer Gillen and Brenden Funk.

Taylor Garcia placed third in the shot put with a toss of 46-9 1/4 and the discus with a throw of 137-1.

Berry finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.1 and third in the 200 in 22.7.

Dillon Goltl finished third in the 800 with a time of 50.9.

Class C-10 at Arapahoe

First-place girls winners from Cambridge were Frankie Petersen, high jump (5-0); Bailey Soucie, shot put (42-0 1/2); Soucie, discus (113-3); and 3200 relay (Kellie Ballou, Danielle Carpenter, Petersen and Soucie), 10:10.2.

First-place girls winners from Southern Valley were the 400 relay (Justina Snider, Christine Bohl, Abby Schoen, Kirstie Sheneman), 51.9.

First-place girls winners from DCS were Amanda Downey, 62.3; and Gabby Mullanix, DCS, 3200, 12:04.2.

Southwest's Layne McConville won the 800 in 2:35.5 and 1600 in 5:39.3 and was second in the 3200 in 12:14.

She ran the anchor leg on the second-place 3200 relay that posted a time of 10:11.6. Miranda Sheets, Taylor Brooks and Kassidy McConville ran the first three legs.

Arapahoe's Cayla Polston finished second in the 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.2). She was the top placer for the Warriors.

First-place winners for the Cambridge boys were Gus Petersen, triple jump (43-3 1/2); and the 1600 relay (Terry Mowry, Petersen, Ethan Long, Andrew Carpenter), 3:32.8.

Petersen added second-place finishes in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles (15.4 and 40.9).

Other area first-place boys winners were Steven Sander, DCS, pole vault, 13-4; D.J. Rison, Southern Valley, shot put, 50-2 1/2; Dillon Breinig, Arapahoe, discus, 147-6; Trevor Confer, DCS, 400, 51.9; and Maclane Scott, Arapahoe, 3200, 10:29.

Class C-11 at Bayard

Area girls placing first were Elisa Carlson, Perkins County, pole vault, 9-0; Sara Wilson, Perkins County, shot put, 40-4 1/3; Jenni Sis, Perkins County, 100, 12.6 and 200, 26.3.

Sis also finished second in the 400 with a time of 62.1.

Area boys placing first were Michael York, Perkins County, triple jump, 39-0 1/2; Alex Sharp, Chase County, shot put, 47-10; Ryan Pankonin, Perkins County, 3200, 10:48.4; and Lance Glunz, Perkins County, 110 hurdles, 15.6.
