Local students among 2,400 UNL grads to receive degrees today, Saturday

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Approximately 2,400 students are scheduled to receive degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in commencement exercises May 8 and 9.

UNL will conduct separate commencement exercises for postgraduate (May 8), baccalaureate (May 9) and law (May 9) degrees.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman will preside over the graduate and baccalaureate ceremonies at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, while Steven Willborn, dean of the College of Law, will preside over the law exercises at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Chemist Eugene "Gene" Cordes will address the baccalaureate ceremonies, UNL mathematics professor Judy Walker will address the postgraduate ceremonies and Theodore C. "Ted" Sorensen, former special counsel and adviser to President John F. Kennedy, will address the law graduates.

The degree recipients are from 44 states, the District of Columbia, and 40 countries.

A list of graduates from the Gazette area follows. The list includes students who received degrees from the University of Nebraska at Omaha or the University of Nebraska Medical Center in UNO or UNMC programs offered on the UNL campus. Information includes the graduate's name, college, degree and any applicable honors. Honors include degrees with distinction, high distinction or highest distinction (cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude for UNO degrees).

IMPERIAL: Eric Andrew Fuehrer, Dentistry (UNMC), doctor of dental surgery; Stephen Alan Hanna, Engineering, B.S. in mechanical engineering; Dillon Bruce Harchelroad, Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, B.S. in agribusiness; Stephanie Rozanne Varilek, Graduate College, master of music.
