Card boys, Eagle girls claim RPAC titles

Grant Strunk/McCook Daily Gazette Cambridge miler Hayden Ekberg reaches to the heavens after winning the mile at the RPAC meet in Bertrand Friday. "It was a tough day, it was good to have it end on a good note," Ekberg said. Ekberg won the 1600 meter run in 4:44.90 and joined Connor Rich, Cletus Macke and Seth Trosper to win the 4x800 relay.

BERTRAND -- Legendary Hayes Center boys track coach Dale Bubak made an appearance at the Republican Plains Activities Conference track meet to watch the Cardinal boys win the conference meet at Bertrand Friday.

Bubak coached the Cardinals to five consecutive Class D state track titles 1968-72.

"Winning the boys championship was a team effort," coach Mark Frecks said.

"We had a lot of individuals come through with strong efforts that allowed us to score in almost all the events we had competitors in.

"It was also gratifying to see our athletes give great effort with the presence of Hayes Center legendary Coach Dale Bubak at the meet and retiring starter Kent May starting the meet."

Brian Christner won three golds for the Cardinals with wins in the 100, 200 and teamed up with Evan Messersmith, Jack Loomis and Luke Clifford to win the 4x100 relay. Christner, Tyler Clifford, Evan Messersmith and Brady Rosno placed second in the 4x400 relay.

Tyler Clifford leaped 6-foot-1 to set a new mark in the high jump.

Cambridge sophomore Gus Petersen captured three events for the Trojans. Petersen won the 300 hurdles in 41.6 seconds and set RPAC records in the 110 hurdles at 15.6 and the triple jump at 43-01.

2008 State Champions Blair Dixon of Wauneta-Palisade and Taylor Tacha of Bertrand went head-to-head in the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdles with Dixon edging Tacha in the 100 in 12.7 and Tacha winning the 100 hurdles in 15 seconds.

Dixon set the 400 record in 59.3 seconds and won the 200 in 26.1.

Tacha won the 300 hurdles in 46 seconds.

Southwest distance runner Layne McConville picked up three gold medals setting a new meet records in the 3200 meter with a time of 12:13.2 and the 1600 at 5:40.5.

McConville also won the 800 in 2:28.8 and placed second in the long jump.

Cambridge senior Bailey Soucie set a new mark in the shot put with a toss of 41-02.5.

Soucie teamed up with Lisa Malchow, Traci Keyser and Frankie Petersen for a meet record in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:16.90.

Soucie also won the 4x800 relay with Kellie Ballou, Keyser and Petersen and place second in the discus.
