HAYES CENTER -- Joyce Lavaughn Hastings, of Hayes Center, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Great Plains Regional Center in North Platte after a short courageous battle with cancer. She was 68 years old.

Joyce was born to Harley A. and Helen Marie (Phelps) Scott in Scottsbluff, Neb., on May 31, 1940. She attended school in Palisade.

On Sept. 13, 1955, she was united in marriage to Wayne Robert Hastings in Atwood, Kan. To this union three daughters were born. They made their home on a farm north of Hayes Center where Joyce was an instrumental part of the farming operation. She was also a bus driver for the Hayes Center Schools for 25 years. Most recently, Joyce was owner and operator of a bar and restaurant in Hayes Center.

She was a member of the Hayes Center Library and Cemetery board. She loved music and singing occasionally with her brother's band. She enjoyed reading, sewing, following her grandchildren in their many activities and spending time with her many family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harley and Helen Scott; her husband, Wayne Hastings; three brothers, Dorence, Gene and Darwin Scott; and two sisters, Phyllis Loper and Mavis Scott.

Survivors include her three daughters, Connie and husband, Mick Tines of North Platte, Cindy and husband, Todd Kinney of Fort Collins, Colo., and Tammy and husband, Matt Schwenk of Hayes Center; two brothers, Ron Scott and wife, Julie of Greeley, Colo., and VerDon Scott and wife, Denyse of Hayes Center; 10 grandchildren, Crista and husband, Jason Murrish, Jamie Tines, Elizabeth Kinney, Jessica Kinney, Alexis Kinney, Andie Kinney, Alex Kinney, Katie Schwenk, Kasey Schwenk and Kody Schwenk; one great-granddaughter, Rylee Marie Murrish; and numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be today until 8 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.carpenterbreland.com.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 9, 2009, 2 p.m. at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Hayes Center with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock and Father Val Bartek officiating. Burial will be in the Hayes Center Cemetery.
