Miller and Associates of McCook are the consulting engineers for the $8 million project, which is estimated to begin this fall and finish up in 2010. The joint facility will be on 30 acres between U.S. Highway 6-34 and Airport Road.
The design agreement is for $17,350 for drawings and specifications and up to $18,000 for 60 days of construction observation. The project calls for 3,000 feet each of water main and sewer collection lines plus connections to the existing system.
The facility will be used to train units from Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. There are no plans yet for air service but the option has been discussed, said City Manager Kurt Fritsch this morning.
Benefits of the proposed facility will outweigh the initial costs, Fritsch said, with increased development and activity in the community.
Costs of the project will be $150,000 for the sewer mains and $125,000 for the water mains. The sewer extension will be paid with $75,000 for two years using city sales tax revenue. The water main will be paid by rate users with money from the enterprise fund.

Does this mean the water rates are going up again??
Is the current National Guard building being considered for a new public safety center??
Two more buildings within City Limits going empty. Is this really necessary? In times of recession everyone has to pull back, watch their pocket books, cut here and there and make do with what they've got. Why can't they? Why can't the city sales tax revenue be spent on updating (or tearing down) existing buildings, streets, parks, sidewalks, etc.
It's really a shame there aren't public meetings where you two could go and ask these questions to the people who could answer them.
