Francis Leland Hanes
CATAWISSA, Pa. -- Francis L. Hanes, age 88, of 312 Hollow Road, Catawissa, Pa., passed away March 13, 2009 in Bloomsburg Health Care Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Frontier County to H. Ellsworth and I. Fern Hanes. He farmed there except for the period of 3 ½ years when he was an anti aircraft gunner in the Army. He served in North Africa and Europe. His wife, Margaret, had been an aircraft spotter in the British Army at one of those sites. They married shortly after she immigrated to the U.S. in 1947. The couple and their two children: Lesley and Richard, moved to Bloomsburg, Pa. in 1954. In 1976 he, Margaret and Lesley moved to a farmett in Catawissa. He enjoyed horseback riding until the age of 80 and using his riding lawn mower like a farm tractor for various chores. He enjoyed watching baseball and football games. Most of his working life was spent at a Chevy Dealership preparing new and used cars for sale.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Charles, his parents, sisters: Mamie Crawford, Viva Wollman and his wife, Margaret.
He is survived by daughter, Lesley of Catawissa, son, Richard of Cheyenne, Wyo.; grandsons: Brian and Jeff of Colorado, as well as brothers: Leo of Curtis, Robert of Lasalle, Colo., Dean of Loveland, Colo.; sister, Carol Arent of Red Feather Lakes, Colo.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 20, 2009, 1 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Raymond Durner officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola Cemetery with a military committal.
He had been a member of the Bloomsburg American Legion for thirty-years. Anyone so inclined may make a donation in his memory to the Indianola American Legion Post 344, 39547 US Highway 6, Indianola, NE 69034.
