Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Harsh, died Wednesday (March 11, 2009) at Community Hospital in McCook at the age of 97.
She was born April 6, 1911, at Rockford, Neb., the daughter of the late Rev. Willis and Etta (Tibbetts) Mills. Betty and her family resided in several communities and she graduated from Benedict High School in 1929 at Benedict, Neb. She attended the University of Omaha and began teaching school.
On April 27, 1932, Betty married Lester Harlan Harsh at Atlanta, Neb., and they farmed for 36 years south of Bartley, Neb. They moved to McCook in 1968.
Betty was a member of the United Methodist Women since 1932, a member of Dorcas Chapter 144 Order of Eastern Star at Bartley and GY Chapter PEO.
While her husband served on the Nebraska Legislature, she was a member of the Unicameral Club and Legislative Ladies League. A member of the General Federation of Women's Club and served on the board of the High Plains Museum.
She was a member of the Busy Bee Club at Bartley and for 30 years she served on the Community Hospital Auxiliary.
One April 24, 2008, Betty received the first Annie Morse Volunteer Award at the Hospital Auxiliary dinner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester on June 28, 1994, her parents,one grandson, Travis Harsh, six brothers and one sister.
Betty is survived by three sons, Del Harsh and wife, Sherry of Cambridge, Neb., Stephen Harsh and wife, Karen of Okemos, Mich., and Philip Harsh and wife, Martha of Salida, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Douglas Harsh, Daniel Harsh, Diana Dee and Greg Laird, Dennis and Shastyn Harsh, Jeffrey Harsh and wife, Trisha, Fredric Harsh, Holly and Jeff Smith and Amanda Harsh; three step-grandchildren, Kirby Kester, Kari Kester and Kipp Kester; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Vernice and husband, the Rev. Vernon LeMon; and relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2009, at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Interment will be in the Bartley Cemetery at Bartley.
