Grants available to rehabilitate homes

KEARNEY -- Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska has been awarded $100,000 in HOME funds to rehabilitate six homes in Furnas, Frontier, Red Willow and Gosper counties.

The grant provides money to renovate and rehabilitate homes for low-to-moderate income families.

The work on individual homes includes repairs needed to bring the house up to electrical, safety and construction codes within the Nebraska Department of Economic development's Minimum Standards for Rehabilitation.

Repairs such as roofing, siding, windows, painting, heating, electrical, insulation and some interior remodeling are all within the guidelines of the program.

This grant is based on deferred loans, whicha re forgiven in full if the homeowner lives in the house for 10 years after completion of rehab.

To be eligible, families must have an annual income of 80 percent or less of the median income. For instance, a family of four must have an income of $41,450 or below in Furnas, Frontier or Red Willow counties and an income of $43,050 or below in Gosper County.
