Creighton men topple Valley leader Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. -- Freshman Antoine Young scored 13 points and was one of four players in double-figures as the Creighton men's basketball team picked up a 73-64 victory at first-place Bradley on Saturday night. The Jays played without the services of top scorer Booker Woodfox, who was sidelined by an ankle injury.

Creighton is now 13-4 on the year (3-2 MVC), while Bradley fell to 10-6 (4-1 MVC) and saw its five-game win streak snapped.

The Jays held BU without a field goal for 4:06 while getting six points from Kenny Lawson Jr. and a three-pointer by Young to stretch its lead to 20-12 just past the nine minute mark of the first half.

Consecutive baskets by Cavel Witter gave CU its largest lead of the first half at 27-17 with 4:44 to go. Bradley would hold Creighton scoreless the rest of the first half while getting two three-pointers from Sam Maniscalco and a trey from Dodie Dunson to close out the half and draw within one.

After Bradley got within 49-46 on a lay-up by Eddren McCain, the Jays would score seven straight to open up a 56-46 lead. Kenton Walker would score on an offensive putback to open the splurge. Stinnett would then end a streak of nine straight misses with a pull-up jumper before capping the run with a three-point play in transition.

BU responded with two free throws from Dodie Dunson and a lay-up by Theron Wilson to get back to within six before Justin Carter's three-pointer helped extend the lead to nine at 61-52. However, CU would keep the Braves at bay while making 17-of-21 free throws in the second half.

Creighton had four players in double-figures, paced by 14 points from Witter, 13 from Young, 12 from Stinnett and 10 from Lawson Jr. CU shot 48.9 percent for the game, 47.1 percent from three-point range and 82.6 percent from the line.

Bradley was led by 16 points from Dodie Dunson, while Theron Wilson had 15. BU shot 37 percent for the game and 69.2 percent from the line while outrebounding the Jays 33-31.

Creighton returns home on Wednesday for a 7 pm game against Southern Illinois.

NOTES: Creighton stayed at the same downtown Peoria hotel as the Harlem Globetrotters and Washington Generals, who were in town for a 1 pm contest at Carver Arena. Former Bluejays to have played for the Globetrotters include Larry House and Bob Gibson ...Sophomore Kaleb Korver made the start in place of injured guard Booker Woodfox ...Antoine Young drained his first career three-pointer at the 13:36 mark of the first half after missing the first 11 attempts of his career.

Creighton women beat Shockers

OMAHA -- Creighton out-rebounded Wichita State 50-30 and led by as many as 21 in a 53-45 victory Saturday afternoon at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Kelsey Woodard led all players with 16 points, making 4-of-8 three-pointers in the victory which moved the Bluejays to 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference and 7-8 overall. The Shockers dropped to 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in the MVC with the loss.

Wichita State and Creighton played even through the first six minutes of play before the Bluejays closed the first half on a 23-8 run to claim the a 32-17 halftime lead. Daria Frazier's only first-half basket in nine attempts gave the Shockers their final lead of the game, up 9-8 5:25 into the game. The Jays tied the game at nine on a free-throw and took the lead for good on a Woodard three-pointer with 13:40 left in the opening half.

The Jays out-rebounded WSU 25-16 in the first half and held the Shockers to just 25.8 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Woodard scored 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first half.

The Shockers scored the first seven points after halftime to cut CU's lead to eight with just over two minutes gone by after half. WSU would then go on a field goal draught, while CU built to its largest lead of the game, up 46-25 with 11 minutes to play.

The Shockers went eight minutes and 15 seconds between field goals before Val Siemens drained her only field goal attempt of the game with 9:13 left. WSU closed the game on a 17-5 run to bring the final margin to eight.

CU out-rebounded WSU 25-14 after the half for a plus-20 margin on the glass in the game. Freshman DaNae Moore led all players with a career-best 12 boards, while her career-high nine points left her one shy of her first collegiate double-double.

Woodard finished 4-of-8 from three-point range in the game and was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line for her 16 points. Chevelle Herring was the only other Jay in double figures, finishing with 10 and a team-best three assists.

Frazier scored 10 points in the second half to tie Haleigh Lankster for the Shocker scoring lead with 12 points. Marcy Sudbeck led WSU with 10 rebounds.

Creighton has now won 10 of its last 11 home MVC games.

The Jays will hit the road for their next two MVC games, playing at Southern Illinois and Evansville next weekend. CU and SIU tip at 7:05 p.m. in Carbondale on Thursday.
