The city will be receiving new fire fighting equipment and a garage at the Heritage Senior Center, thanks to federal and state grants.

The McCook City Council approved Monday night at its regular meeting bid specifications for both items.

Grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security will pay a total of $107,850, after costs adjustments, for 20 new self-contained breathing apparatus at the McCook City Fire Department. The city's five percent match is $5,392.

The equipment is worn by firefighters and rescue workers to provide breathable air in a fire or hazardous atmosphere and will replace 20 SBACs that are about 11 years old. The new devices will meet 2007 standards set by the National Fire Protection Association

Federal and state grants totaling $100,000, with a 20 percent match from the city, will go toward a new public transit garage at the Senior Center.

The 40 by 60 steel building will be paid for with federal and state grants, at 80 percent, with a 20 percent match from the city. Total amount of the grants was $100,000. The building will be used for vehicle maintenance and storage.
