HOXIE -- Willis Carman, 77, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 2009) at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan.
He was born June 3, 1931, in Decatur County to Joe and Myrtle (Bell) Carman. He grew up in Decatur County and attended country schools. He graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1949 and later entered the U.S. Army.
On Feb. 14, 1953, he married Peggy Long in Oberlin. He lived in Alaska, Oberlin and Sheridan County, Kan., before returning to Oberlin. He moved to Hoxie in 2007. He was a farmer and sold parts for Kump Motors.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Shriners and Masons.
He was preceded in death by his father Joe, two brothers, Dennis and Jackie Carman and sister-in-law, Janice Carman.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Hoxie; mother, Myrtle Carman Waldo of Oberlin; son, Phyll Carman of Boulder, Colo.; daughters, Diana Alstrom and husband, Larry of Hoxie; Deborah Campbell and husband, Tom of Hoxie, Cindy Ostmeyer and husband, Charlie of Hoxie, Anne Heskett and husband, Richard of Wichita, Kan., and Jodee Carman and Karl Stillman of Hoxie; brother, Max Carman and husband, Veanna of Oberlin; sister-in-law, Alice Carman of Mesa, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m., and Thursday from 8 a.m., until time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Sheridan County Health Complex, American Lung Association or Shriners.
