tops UNO hockey
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) -- Geoff Irwin had a goal and an assist to help No. 17 Minnesota State, Mankato, defeat No. 15 Nebraska-Omaha 4-3 and snap a six-game losing streak Saturday.
Irwin's empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining was the game-winner, as Omaha added a late goal. Channing Boe, Kael Mouillierat and Trevor Bruess added goals for Mankato.
Minnesota State (9-9-3) grabbed a 2-0 lead midway through the first period when forwards Bruess and Mouillierat scored goals nine seconds apart. The Mankato team record is two goals in a span of seven seconds, which the Mavericks accomplished in 1973-74.

Boe, a sophomore defenseman, scored his first career goal at 6:50 of the third period to put Mankato ahead again.
Ambroz scored his second goal with seven seconds left in the game.
Mankato goalie Mike Zacharias stopped 17 shots, while Omaha's Jerad Kaufmann made 22 saves.
The game was the first of the schools' Spirit of the Maverick Trophy series. The nonconference opponents play two games for the traveling trophy each season. Omaha currently holds the trophy. The teams will play again on Feb. 24 in Omaha.

dominate Doane
KEARNEY -- Junior Drake Beranek scored 21 first half points and the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team held Doane College to 29 percent shooting in a 69-45 win Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.
UNK, which last played Dec. 21, improved to 5-6 with the NAIA Tigers dropped to 7-10 on the season.
Leading from start to finish, the Lopers got out to a 16-6 lead seven minutes into the game as Doane couldn't find its offensive groove. The Tigers missed 13 of its first 17 shots with redshirt freshman Max Froehlich (Pierce) having three blocks during this stretch.
Doane never really warmed up, finishing the night 19 of 65 from the floor including a 4 of 27 effort from beyond the arc (14.8 percent).
Beranek carried the offensive load for UNK early on, making 9 of 15 shots to score 21 of the Lopers first 39 points. Finishing with 28, this marks the sixth straight game Beranek (Ravenna) has scored at least 23 points.
Finally, Beranek pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, making this his third double double of the year.
UNK came into the night red hot from the three point line but cooled off a bit, making 10 of 34 perimeter bombs (29.4 percent). But by hitting some late threes, the Lopers have now made at least 10 triples in five straight games.
Also for the Lopers, Hemingford redshirt freshman Chris Deans had 11 points and seven rebounds with Omaha junior Richard Marion having six assists, five points and three steals.
Doane was led by Tyler Weatherholt (10 points) and center Jack Lind (10 points, eight rebounds). Finally, former Loper Jake Jonson had six points and three assists in 27 minutes.

finish 3-1 at
Lone Star Duals
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- The third-ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney varsity wrestling team returned to the mats this past weekend by going 3-1 Saturday at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The NU Jets, from Wichita, Kan., were docked one team misconduct point prior to the match.
In between the wins, the Lopers fell to 9th-ranked Oklahoma, 32-7, a rare Division I dual for UNK.
On the day, Kansas junior Derek Ross was the only Loper to go 4-0. Alternating between 197 and 285 pounds, Ross pushed his season record to 23-12 by recording a 27 second fall in the Stevens Point dual, edging OU's Kyle Bergstedt, 4-3, and then getting another close win against OCU heavyweight Jeremy Johnson, 5-3.
Finally, Ross was one of two Lopers to get a forfeit win vs. Newman.

Etherton had two falls while Usman and Sutton each had two tech falls. Finally, Farrell -- a 2007 All-American at 184 pounds -- had a fall and a tech fall.
Against the Sooners, UNK lost two matches by a point, including a 4-3 setback by Usman against 9th-ranked Jeff James. In the dual prior, Stevens Point jumped out to a 9-6 lead but the Lopers won four straight classes -- 149 to 174 pounds -- to avoid the upset.
Abril, McCurdy and Ross each had falls against the 10th-ranked Pointers.
UNK won the final seven weights to roll by the 11th-ranked OCU Stars. Etherton had a fall in 2:02 while Usman recorded a 16-5 tech fall over Andrew Pontikes. Finally, the Lopers used three falls, three majors, two forfeits and one tech fall to shut out Newman.
