HAMLET -- Hugo Gus "Hoot" Mohr, 93, died Saturday (Dec. 27, 2008) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.

He was born April 3, 1915, at Avoca, to Gus F. and Olga (Witzke) Mohr. He moved with his parents from Eastern Nebraska to the Hamlet area, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Hamlet High School in 1933. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, on the USS Eridanus during World War II, returning in 1946

He married Ann Margaret Zumhingst on Nov. 11, 1953. They lived in Pierre, S.D., for a short time while he worked on the construction of the Oahe Dam. In 1955, the couple moved to a farm north of Hamlet where they settled and farmed for most of their lives.

He was a member of the American Legion. He also served as a Hayes County Commissioner from 1974 -1982.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann in 1994; one brother, John and brother-in-laws, Paul Meyers, Don Stroh and Dale Rhone.

Survivors include his sons, Gus and wife, Peggy of Spanish Forks, Utah, Gary and wife, Doreen of Enders and John and wife, Mary of Lincoln; sisters, Evelyn Meyers of North Platte, Lucille Stroh of Medford, Ore., and Norma Rhone of Cozad; sister-in-law, Marian Mohr of Arnold; and six grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m. (MT) in the Hamlet Cemetery with the Rev. David Kahle officiating.

There is no visitation, his body was cremated.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Wauneta Senior Center.
