Myron Mingo

MARKSVILLE, La. -- McCook Community College men's basketball player Myron Mingo was shot and killed in a bar incident in Marksville, La., early Sunday morning.

The time of the shooting was listed as 1:11 a.m.

Mingo, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard who started some games for the MCC Indians, was an innocent bystander, according to Garland Foreman, a reporter for the Bunkie (La.) Record.

A struggle ensued and the pistol went off once. The bullet struck the floor of the lounge, ricocheted upward and struck Mingo, who was several feet away, in the right upper chest and neck.

Police arrived 1-2 minutes later and rushed Mingo to the hospital before the ambulance arrived. Mingo died in the emergency room and few minutes after the police got him to the hospital.

Gavin McGhee, 24, Marksville, was identified as the shooter. McGhee fled the scene. He turned himself into the police at 3:20 p.m. Sunday.

McGhee was charged with second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm on the premises where alcoholic beverages were served.

McGhee is being held under $50,000 bond and probation in the Avoyelles Parish Jail.

The shooter's girlfriend was charged with obstruction of justice.

"After hearing the news, I was deeply saddened in learning of the loss of Myron," said Dr. Michael Chipps, president of the Mid Nebraska Community College Our entire college family will be keeping the Mingo family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

  • Myron was at a club, not a bar. He was a great young man who was never in any kind of trouble. Saying he was at a bar not only makes Myron, but his family and the MCC basketball family bad. Please get your story staight before you report it.

  • This is simply a tragic loss to everyone. A young man that was trying and succeeding in doing something good with his life had his like taken by a piece of garbage that was up to no good trying to be a piece of crap gangster. The shooter would have never done anything with his life except try to take what other people earned because he was too stupid to earn anything himself. Myron would have been a contributor and a good man, it is a sad day for everyone.
