Movie Review - Yes Man

Starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel.

Rated PG-13 for crude sexual humor, language and brief nudity.

Yes Man is an interesting flick for me. I am about tired of Jim Carrey as an actor having enjoyed his first movies like Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, and Liar Liar, however started to hate some of his other flicks like The Majestic and The Number 23. Soon all of his comedies became the same movie for me and I was slowly not liking newer comedies like Fun with Dick and Jane. So, I went into Yes Man with a certain attitude that I wouldn't probably like this film.

I didn't exactly jump for joy, but it was entertaining and although it has a lot of the regular Jim Carrey antics - it also has a lot of heart and managed to win me over into liking it. It's a great flick to set down and just munch on some popcorn while enjoying a break from Christmas craziness.

Jim Carrey plays a man that has been divorced and turns away from any social interaction so he doesn't get hurt again. His buddies try to pull him out of it, by inviting him to lots of things, but unfortunately, he always says NO. Soon, he meets up with an old friend who convinces him to come to a YES meeting where a man challenges him to say YES. Carrey then carries then the rest of the movie on saying YES to everything. It's a wild ride and although all the little sketches don't exactly feel like a full thought, they are strung together loosely around a simple story that allows for the random sketches to feel part of the process.

Without much story to act on, the two main stars squeeze everything they can out of the comedy bits and it succeeds in keeping you entertained. I can't say I'd be exactly thrilled to watch this film again, as I don't think the situations and story will keep me entertained the second time, however I highly recommend it for a first time viewing.

Also - it features a quick ten minutes of pure Nebraska footage including the stars at a Husker game.

Yes Man is playing at Cinema 3 in McCook. Check www.fridleytheatres.com for showtimes.
