BENKELMAN - Sheridan R. Magnani, 75, died Monday (Dec. 15, 2008) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born Jan. 5, 1933, to Sheridan "Ray" and Anna (Pettit) Magnani, in Cheyenne County, Kan., near the farm where he grew up and spent most of his life. He attended elementary school in a small country school near his home. He attended and graduated from Benkelman High School in 1951.

On May 10, 1963, he married Maryanne Kahler at the Lutheran Church in Curtis. They made their home on the family farm in Cheyenne County in Northwest Kansas.

He took pride in farming the land that his father farmed before him. He and his wife, raised Hampshire pigs for the first several years of their marriage.

He was a welder and mechanic, electrician, plumber and carpenter.

He drove the school bus for the Cheylin School district and then for Dundy County. He and his wife also opened a fireworks stand more than 40 years ago.

After retirement, they spent time in Texas with family as well as in California. He was a life-time member of the "Good Sam Club" a camping club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Anna Magnani; his wife, Maryann; an infant son; a granddaughter; and his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his sons, Jim Magnani and wife, June of Benkelman and Ray Magnani and wife, Carrie of Bird City Kan.; daughters, Dixcie Slade of Fort Morgan, Colo., Schelly Magnani of Bird City, Kan., and Evonne Emig of Benkelman: 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (MST) at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman, with the Rev. Sean Redmond officiating. Services will conclude at the chapel. The family will gather for a private inurnment at a later time.

There will be no visitation or viewing. A memorial has been established in his name.
