The McCook Bison varsity girls rolled to a 20-point lead in the first half against the Cozad Haymakers Tuesday night at the McCook High School gymnasium and led at the intermission 30-15.

And then the Haymakers went on a 19-4 run in the third quarter to tie the score and took a 2-point lead at 46-44 before the Bison scored the final 7 points to win the game 51-46.

After McCook senior Tara Powell sprained her ankle on an intentional foul and collision after stealing the ball and going in for a layup, Bison coach Barry Schaeffer summoned sophomore Gretchen Sehnert off the bench to shoot free throws.

Sehnert, who made 6-of-6 free throws for all of her points, calmly sank both charities to clinch the victory.

"We shot the ball really well and forced turnovers in the first half," Schaeffer said. "We had a cold spell and tightened up. Give Cozad a lot of credit."

Powell, who had a layup and steal to give the Bison a 49-46 lead, finished with 14 points to lead the Bison. Senior Joanna Bryant, who hit two key 3-pointers in the game-winning rally, added 13 points.

Meagan Carfield and Brianna Watkins each scored 6 points, Hanah Swanhorst 4 and Sydney Jumps 2.

The Bison were outrebounded 36-23. Watkins led the Bison on the boards with 6, followed by Powell and Bryant with 4 each. Carfield, Swanhorst and Jumps each had 3 boards.

Bryant had 6 steals, Powell 5, Jumps 3, Watkins 1 and Carfield 1. Watkins had 2 assists. Powell, Bryant, Carfield, Swanhorst and Jumps each had 1 assist.

McCook made 17-of-57 field goals (29.8 percent), including 5-of-16 3-pointers (31.2 percent), and 12-of-21 free throws (57.1 percent).

Cozad's Carlie Pinkelman poured in 22 points to lead the Haymakers. Emily Chrisinger added 9 and Jessica Finnegan 6.

Cozad made 22-of-46 field goals (47.8 percent) and missed its only 3-pointer and was 2-for-6 from the foul line (33.3 percent).

McCook evened its record at 3-3.

The Bison girls will host North Platte at 7:30 p.m. Friday and along with the MHS boys will play at Holdrege Saturday.
