Rawlins boys, Stratton girls top field at Brewster

BREWSTER, Kan. -- The Rawlins County-Atwood boys and the Stratton, Colo., girls claimed the championships of the 2008 Brewster Sagebrush Shootout.

The Rawlins County boys blasted St. Francis 86-44 for the championship.

The Stratton girls defeated Rawlins County 50-41 for the girls title.

The Rawlins County boys scored 91 and 90 points in their other two games en route to a 3-0 tournament record.

St. Francis and Brewster were 2-1, Cheylin and Stratton, Colo. were 1-2 and Triplains went 0-3.

Stratton defeated Rawlins County 50-41 in the girls title game and finished tournament play with a 3-0 record.

Rawlins County and Brewster went 2-1 in girls play, Triplains and Cheylin were 1-2 and St. Francis 0-3.

In other boys scores from the Brewster tourney Saturday, Stratton, Colo., defeated Triplains 63-37 and Brewster defeated Cheylin 57-38.

In girls action from Saturday, Cheylin edged St. Francis 53-52 and Brewster beat Triplains 54-49.

Rawlins County boys 86,

St. Francis 44

Four Buffaloes scored in double figures, led by Drew Basgall with 24 points. Basgall hit 10-of-15 shots, including 4-of-6 3-pointers.

Elijah Kastens added 18 points, Marcus Cahoj 17 and Eric Holub 14. Jackson Grafel contributed 9 points.

Cahoj had 11 rebounds, Basgall 9, Grafel 9, Kastens 8 and Holub 8. Basgall and Kastens each had 6 assists. Holub had 6 steals.

Matt Raile led St. Francis with 17 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Trent Kinen scored 11 points.

Trent Raile had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Jacob Riedel had 6 points.

Rawlins County broke open the game with a 28-7 second quarter run and a 21-9 third period.

Stratton girls 50,

Rawlins County 41

The Stratton girls jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter and Rawlins County had to play catchup the rest of the game

Stratton was paced by Jordan May with 20 points. Morgan Fox added 17. May hit 6-of-10 free throws and Fox 5-of-7.

Hillary Chvatal led the Rawlins County girls with 13 points. Wendy Castens added 10 and Emily Chessmore 6.

Chvatal grabbed 12 rebounds and Jill Bergling 11 as the Buffaloes outrebounded Stratton 36-29.

Castens had 4 steals, Bergling 3, Chessmore 2 and Chvatal 2. Bergling dished off 5 assists, Whitney Green 2, Castens, Chessmore 1 and Chvatal 1.

The Buffaloes had 21 turnovers and forced 25.

Quinter (Kan.) Tournament

The Hoxie girls basketball team captured the Quinter Tournament championship with a 62-38 win over Ellis in the title game. The Indians improved to 5-0.

The Hoxie boys (2-2) defeated Oakley 54-39 in the third-place boys game.

Quinter won the boys championship game 62-41 over Ellis. Golden Plains defeated Wheatland-Grinnell 41-40 in the boys third-place game.

Oakley defeated Wheatland-Grinnell 45-37 in the third-place girls game.

Quinter's girls placed fifth with a 53-47 win over Golden Plains.
