LA JUNTA, Colo. -- The McCook Community College women's basketball team lost three close games at the Region IX Sub-Regional Tournament.

The tournament was hosted by Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo.

The Indians lost to Western Nebraska 68-56 Thursday, Otero JC 76-64 Friday and Lamar Junior College, Colo., 61-57 Saturday.

In Saturday's loss to Lamar, the Indians were led by Skylar Johnson with 14 points, followed by Emmalee Fladland's 13 off the bench.

"Today's loss completed our Sub Region Tournament in Lamar," said MCC assistant coach Carter Roe. "We fell at the hands off our opponents in all three games which was very dissappointing, but on a positive note, we had a chance to win each game.

"As a young team one of the most difficult things to do is to learn how to win. Not only learning how to win, but preparing to win and coming to the gym expecting to win. We all are believing more and more in one another each and everyday and each and every game we get a little bit better."

After a slow first half (31-15), the Indians picked up their intensity in the second half.

Skylar Johnson led a balanced scoring effort with 14, all coming in the second half, follwed by Alexa Ward's 13, Sierra Guy's 12 and Britany Bunker's 11. Julia Hale was productive again, chipping in 8.

"The ladies battled the entire second half, and we got extremely gutsy efforts out of Britany Bunker (hurt back), Tara Wille (hurt back), and Sierra Guy (hurt hip and dislocated finger)," Roe said.

"Otero is a quality ball club, they play hard nosed basketball and they just honestly don't give an inch, they are going to win an awful lot of ball games this season. That said, we are improving and improving and improving and soon that is going to translate into winning.

"Again there are a lot of things to work on and improve and we'll go back to work this week in practice and try and improve on our weakness, but as a team, we just don't ever quit and that is a testament to the character of this group of young women. We are going to be a successful bunch."
