Whitney Korgan qualifies for state swim meet; breaks school records in 50, 100 free

HASTINGS -- The McCook Bison Swim Team opened its season on Saturday with the Hastings Invite.

All of the conference schools who offer swimming competed, making this a preview to the GNAC meet in February.

Top performer for the Bison was Whitney Korgan, a triple medalist. Korgan broke her own school records in the 50 free with a time of 25.63 and the 100 free with a time of 57.54.

She earned a first place finish, with an automatic qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, a fourth place finish in the 100 freestyle with a secondary qualifying time and anchored the 200 freestyle relay time to a third place finish.

Jayde Aufrecht, Katie Latta and Sydney Stamm helped the relay to a finish of 1:50.17.

"Making the automatic time will take the pressure off of Whitney, and let her work on other events as well," said McCook coach Lori Jumps. "This is a goal we had last year, but she didn't make the automatic time until the end of the season. To make an automatic time on our opening meet is huge.

"It is really great to open the season getting to see the competition that we will be up against at the GNAC conference meet at the end of our regular season. It is really beneficial for our athletes to see what they are up against, and start setting goals. We work on weekly goals as well as season long goals with our athletes."

MHS diving coach Kim Korgan agreed.

"Josh Stevens did a great job with his first meet, and really has set some nice goals for himself for the next few meets," Korgan said.

The Bison swim team is at home this week with a quad meet against North Platte, Scottsbluff and Hastings. The meet is Friday at the YMCA.

The diving competition starts at 3 p.m. The swimming competition starts at 4 p.m.
