McCook teen injured in one-car rollover accident

Tuesday, December 2, 2008
ATWOOD -- A McCook teen injured in a one-car rollover accident early Monday morning north of Atwood is being treated at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.

An accident report from Rawlins County Undersheriff Jim Schroeder indicates that the car driven southbound by Crista B. Hudson, 18, of McCook and Trenton, continued straight as it approached the S curve six miles north of Atwood on Highway 25. Hudson's car missed the curve, went into the west ditch and rolled 11⁄2 times, coming to rest on its top. Hudson was not wearing a seat belt, Schroeder said, but the airbags deployed. Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to remove Hudson from her car, he said.

The accident happened about 2 a.m., Schroeder said, and was discovered at 7:23 a.m. Hudson was alone in the vehicle.

Hudson was taken to Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood by Rawlins County EMS and then transferred to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. A representative for the hospital declined to release a condition report.

Undersheriff Schroeder said that two tickets have been issued, one for minor in possession of alcohol and another for transporting an open container of alcohol.

First, thanks to those who responded to Former McCookie, Crista and her family are very near and dear to me. It's always so easy to point a finger of blame. I am sure you were probably never a teenager who stayed out late. Maybe you should give parenting/life lessons to us all. You read one small side of a person's life story and made a quick judgement. Be careful of that as it may come back to haunt you, it could one day be someone you love. Teenagers invariably see themselves as indestructable and make poor decisions based on that feeling. Sadly, some decisions end in the loss of a young persons life. We are very fortunate that this young lady is still with us. Crista and her family need all of the love and support they can get, and none of the finger waging too many are too willing to give.

First off to former McCookie judge not you be judged yourself .Regardless of what the legal drinking age is kids will get what they want however they can get it so lowering or raising really isnt going to change anything .

Second let's see do you sleep in your room with your children so you know where they are at 24/ 7 if the answer to this question is yes then maybe YOU need to reevaulate your parenting .No I am not casting any stones here but again DONT go judging someone else UNLESS you know the FULL story on what is going on in their lives .

NO things in this situation are NOT good but with god's help & a LOT of prayers things for Crista we hope will come out for the better .

It truly is in god's hands as of now .

Crista has a VERY long road ahead of her & so does her family & with negative comments like above out there does NOT help .

If this was YOUR daughter or family member how would you want people to be talking ?

Always remember watch your words carefull because you can NEVER take them back !!

Why??,

Let me answer that for you. It's called a "news"paper for a reason, to bring you the news. Just because it's about someone you know doesn't mean you should attack the press this time. Every time there is an accident, they report what they know at the time, go attack the UnderSheriff that told it to the press.

Why was it necessary to talk about tickets that were issued? Very tacky on your part. Is that really the most important part of this story? No!! Too bad the Gazette can't find a writer with some delicacy.

To Former McCookie:

I was living on my own at 17, and I'm guessing this girl (at 18) is probably on her own, too. All we, as parents, can hope for is that we've taught our children the lessons they need to survive this world and be as happy as they can be. Once they are out of the nest - it's pretty much out of our hands... Sometimes it takes a tragedy of this type for some children to mature. Sad, but true.

To Crista and her parents:

I certainly hope that Crista comes through this accident with good health - both physically and emotionally, and that she is able to handle the pending charges and scathing comments like those made above with her head held high. ALL people make mistakes. The beauty of mistakes is that we can learn from them, forgive ourselves as God forgives us, and grow from the experience. Best wishes to you all!

Just another example of just why the legal drinking age should NOT be lowered!! Where were this girls parents at and what was she doing out driving at 200AM?? Sounds like some parents need to reevaluate their priorities and bone up on the whereabouts of their children!!! All that being said I hope that things turn out well for this girl and that she learns her lesson!
