Roland Junior 'Rod' Brubaker

MAYWOOD -- Roland Junior "Rod" Brubaker was born Aug. 4, 1926, to Arthur M. and Elga B. (Dick) Brubaker in Maywood. He passed away Nov. 25, 2008, in Lincoln, .

Rod grew up on a ranch near Maywood. He attended BluffView School and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.

Rod served his country in the Army Signal Corp in both the United States and in Germany, after which he earned his pilot's license on the GI Bill and returned to the family ranch.

He was a lifelong member of the American Legion.

Five years after meeting her at the Frontier County Fair, Rod married Donna Fickenscher, daughter of Paul and Irene (Bellamy) Fickenscher of Moorefield on May 1, 1949, in Moorefield Union Church. The couple had four children, Patty Ann, James, Joyce and Don and lived on the family ranch.

In 1998, they sold the ranch and moved to an acreage in Lincoln, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a year later on May 1, 1999.

Rod loved baseball and played on the Quick, Neb., baseball team as a young adult, later coaching Quick Little League and Maywood Junior Legion baseball teams on which his sons played.

He planned the Maywood High School outdoor athletic complex and helped with building and maintaining it. Rod was active in the community, serving on the Maywood Co-op Board, Rural Telephone Company Board, Election Board and Maywood School Board when the new junior/senior high school was planned and built.

Rod was known for his ingenuity, independence, integrity, sense of humor, and generosity. He was an accomplished woodworker, building beautiful furniture for his family and friends.

Rod enjoyed attending his children's athletic events, fishing, Nebraska football, and his loyal canine companions. He was always blessed with good neighbors and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Lincoln; three children, James and wife, Joan of Aurora, Colo., Joyce and Jim Matya of Lincoln and Don of Valparaiso; and four grandchildren, Brooke and husband, Justin Korver of Lincoln, Stephen and wife, Shayla Brubaker of Denver, Colo., Brian Brubaker of Orange, Calif., and Jason and wife, Bethany Nadaskay of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patty Ann; sister, Mildred Brubaker of North Platte; and his parents.

Funeral services will be at a later date.

Visitation will be today until 9 p.m., with family present from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., with the family present from 12 - 2 p.m. at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 H Street in Lincoln.

Memorials may be given to Maywood Community Hall or Maywood Cemetery.
