CAMBRIDGE -- Erwin ten Bensel, 95, died Wednesday (Nov. 19, 2008) at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1913, to Herman and Sophia (Broeker) ten Bensel. He grew up on a farm near Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1932. He began farming with his family.
On Aug. 13, 1939, he married Helen Hurdle, she preceded him in death on June 18, 1991.
He was later married to Carrie Johns in January of 1992 and she preceded him in death in January of 1996.
He had his own business selling seed corn for McCurdy and Micogen Seed Company.
He was a 75 year member of the Cambridge Trinity United Methodist Church, a life member of the Cambridge Lions Club, the GRANGE, HAC transportation Board, COOP Board and School Board. He also started the 4-H workers and was a member of the 4-H council.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Helen and Carrie; an infant brother; and two sisters, Irma Bleese and an infant sister.
Survivors include his son, Gary and wife, Jeanie of Cambridge; sister, Doris Fletcher of Cambridge; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery of Cambridge.
Memorials may be left in his name to either the church or Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
