CURTIS -- Marilyn Rose Owens, 71, of Curtis, died Saturday (Nov. 1, 2008) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
She was born on March 31, 1937, to Arthur and Alice Johnson, in Farnam. She graduated from Maywood High School.
On Aug. 21, 1955, she married LaVerne Owens. They made their home south of Curtis. They farmed and raised cattle. In 1975, she adopted the first wild mustang horses to be transferred to Nebraska, so, appropriately, she called the farm, "Wild Horse Haven."
On. Oct. 28, 1983, she moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home from injuries suffered in a horseback riding accident.
She was the founder of the Frontier Wrangleretts Drill Team. She was a member of the Curtis Berean Fundamental Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Alice Johnson; husband, LaVerne; brothers, Johnnie Bob and Billy; and her sister, Margaret Jorgensen.
Survivors include her son, Larry and wife, Marcia Owens of Curtis; daughter, Debra and husband, Richard Nelson of Lincoln; one brother, Jim and wife, Twila Johnson of Stockville, one sister, Millie and husband, Cliff Becker of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Harold Jorgensen of Curtis; sister- in-law, Lulu Mae and husband, Ted Herrick of North Platte; four granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and numerous other family and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday at Congregational Church in Stockville with the Rev. Dale Heimer officiating.
Visitation will be Wednesday 1-8 p.m., with family present from 6-8 p.m., at Blasť-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Curtis. Online condolences can be given at www.blasestrauser.com.
