City Council to consider I-80, I-70 link

Saturday, November 1, 2008

Meeting Monday night, the McCook City Council will consider a resolution from the consent agenda that supports a potential four-lane expressway on U.S. Highway 83, connecting Interstates 70 and 80.

The resolution, backed by the McCook Area Chamber of Commerce and the McCook Economic Development Corp., supports the proposed U.S. Highway 83 expressway that would be five miles south of North Platte to the Kansas border and reciprocal action by Kansas to Interstate 70. The resolution also seeks funding from Congress for a location study to assess the costs and benefits to Nebraska and Southwest Nebraska in the development of a U.S. Highway 83 expressway.

The Red Willow County Commissioners will consider a similar resolution at their meeting Monday, 9 a.m.

  • It is about time the city council attempted something that would bring people through McCook. I think it would be a wonderful idea to get more traffic and a boost to the McCook economy!! Now I just wonder if it is really something they are considering or just something they are talking about to shoot down later. McCook needs growth or it will soon be a "ghost town"!! I will believe it when I see it!!

  • Here is an idea - Colorado just got done Vetoing a highway link similar to this project because of "Personal" issues. It was going to be a Toll Road between I-80 and I-70, so why don't someone work out a deal with that developer and see if they can reach a deal, I have seen states work out a toll road deal, where the Toll is either eliminated over time (After they pay off the road and make some money) or they can discount the toll for local residents.

  • Curious if the plan is to bypass the downtown traffic? I would imagine so. The big winners will be the intersecting communities of the express way and the interstate.

  • Traffic will go right past McCook on their way to Kansas City or other places. This "idea" of a 4-lane road has been a pipe dream for years. More tax dollars that citizens will have to scrape up to give away and for what??? Most of the people don't go out of town due to expensive items. Fuel, vehicles, etc.

Sure, it will bypass downtown traffic. That is the idea. Get to someplace faster than having to stop in a small city. There goes the growth of McCook.

We need a full service truck center / truck stop in McCook. Wal-Mart didn't do anything special except close some very good businesses. And it isn't a very clean store. Has anyone tried to buy specialty items?? Yep, Kearney and North Platte has them. Also have other stores that serve the community well. Not here. It all went away like more businesses will when the 4-lane is built.
