HOLBROOK -- Lela LaVerta Barnett, 91, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 2008) at the Beaver City Manor.
She was born June 9, 1917, north of Cambridge, to Ross and Ollie Opal (Mick) Newcomb. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1935. She completed normal training and taught all eight grades in rural schools. She drove a model A Ford to school.
In 1937, she was united in marriage to Harold Barnett, he preceded her in death in 1998. The family lived on a farm north of Holbrook. They moved to Holbrook upon retirement.
She moved to the farm to live with her son Ron for five and half years until she was no longer able to be alone. She moved to the Beaver City Manor in June of 2008.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Cambridge and later the Holbrook Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; granddaughter, Kim Clary; grandson, Dennis Ross Barnett; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Barnett; and great-grandson, Caleb Sheffield.
Survivors include her seven children, Ron Barnett, Dennis Barnett and Carole Clary and friend, Marian Wilson, all of rural Holbrook, Kathy and husband, Bob Holiday of Elm Creek, Bob and wife, Jeanie of Norcatur, Kan., LeAnn and husband, Jim Huxoll of Cambridge and Mark Barnett of Tecumseh; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Dale Whitson, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Holbrook Cemetery.
Visitation will be today and Friday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Beaver City Manor.
