No action Monday on 'nuisance' house

Tuesday, October 7, 2008
A property declared a public nuisance by the McCook Board of Health did not make it to the City Council's regular meeting Monday night.

According to City Attorney Nate Schneider, the owner of the property at 810 W. Fourth did not appeal the Sept. 29 designation by the McCook Board of Health so the issue will come to the council at a later date.

In other action, the council unanimously voted to approve an ordinance that allows the city to spend a total of $300 per item in public funds for retirement gifts for city employees.

The "Miscellaneous Expenditures" ordinance was approved without discussion and no one spoke at the public hearing held prior to the council vote.

The city has traditionally purchased "Years of Service" pins for city employees every five years, with the average cost for five, 10, 15 and 20 year pins at $50. Pins for employees with 25 years or more cost about $300.

The new ordinance was required per a state law that requires an uniform policy.

Despite missing two key members at the Monday meeting -- City Manager Kurt Fritsch and Mayor Dennis Berry, who is ill -- the council carried on with city business.

This included approving consent agenda items, such as:

* The proclamation of Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 5-Oct 11 and the desgination of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

* the Mayor's appointments to several boards, including: The Parks Advisory Park -- reappointment of Mark Friehe, appointment of Tom Lentz to replace Sarah Williams, both terms expiring May 2011; Planning Commission --reappoint Don Harpst, Kurt Vosburg and Dixie Lorentz, terms expiring Sept. 2011; Tree Advisory Board -- reappoint Jerry Vap, Dan Dueland and Janella Jager, terms expiring November 2013.

* the request from McCook National Bank to close off an alley and a street near the bank Oct. 25 for their annual "Haunted Bank Tour" from 3 p.m. to midnight.
