TRYON -- A. LaVerne Neal, 81, of Tryon, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 2008) at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln.
He was born to Loren Thomas and Nancy Hill Neal in Tryon, on Oct. 18, 1926. He grew up in McPherson County and attended District 9 in Tryon.
He married Doris Priest on July 11, 1946, in North Platte. They lived on various ranches including the Chester Paxton Ranch for five year before settling in on the home place in 1952.
He was a member of the Tryon Methodist Church. He helped start the Sandy Soapweeders 4-H Club, and he was a county commissioner for five years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Derold Mark Neal in December of 1963; two brothers, Kenneth and Robert; and brother-in-law, Bennie Shimmin.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of Tryon; five children, Dave and wife, Linda Neal of York, Evelyn and husband, Terry Pettit of Culbertson, Steve and wife, Sharon Neal of North Platte, Dallas and wife, Judy Neal of North Platte and Kirk and wife, Barbara Neal of Tryon; one sister, Lila Shimmin of North Platte; two sisters-in-law, Betty Neal of Thedford and Sharon Neal of North Platte; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at McPherson County High School with the Rev. Darwin Keeney officiating. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery in Tryon.
Visitation is today and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
