Larry Ernest Johnson, 69, of McCook, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 2008) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born on June 19, 1939, in Holdrege, to Ernest and Lois Irene (Hopkins) Johnson. He received his education in Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School in 1957. He then attended Kearney State Teachers College.
Following his education, he was the band and music instructor for Oxford High School in Oxford. He also taught at Morrill, Franklin and Exeter High Schools.
On March 9, 1962, he married Mary Ellen Middleton. They made their home in Oxford. The couple later divorced.
Larry then met special friend, Barb Giesler. In 2007, the couple began managing the McCook Days Inn together where they operated it as a team.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Merlyn; and three sisters, Lois Anderson, Doris Lavene and Leone Woollen.
Survivors include his daughter, Jill Collins of Walker, La.; son, Jeff Johnson of North Platte; special friend, Barb Giesler of McCook; three brothers: Dean and wife, Jeanne Johnson of Alma, Dennis and wife, Shirley Johnson of Franklin, and Rod Johnson of Kearney; one sister, Phyllis Wentling and husband, Frank of Franklin; brother-in-law, Bernard Woollen and wife, Nita of Wilcox; two granddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with the Rev. Stan Murdoch officiating. Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.
