ATWOOD -- Eugene F. Leitner, 78, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2008).
He was born Aug. 25, 1930, to Carl Andrew and Theresia Elizabeth (Kogl) Leitner. He worked at the grocery store for Glen Williams and attended Atwood grade school. He graduated from Atwood High School in 1948.
On Sept. 2, 1948, he married Mary Kathryn Prideaux. He numerous jobs and in 1956, went to work for his father at Leitner Farm Supply. In 1961, he took over management and bought the business in 1977. He retired in 1996.
He was active in the community and was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He served as Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus 3033 and the parish council for 16 years. He was one of the first rural firefighters when the rural fire department organized in Rawlins County. He also played on the town baseball team in the 1950s.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Eugene M.; one grandson, Shane Felzien; and one granddaughter, Lori Vyzourek.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Atwood; daughters, Marsha and husband, Chuck Felzien and Pam and husband, Lee Vyzourek; sons, Mike and wife, Kim, Mark and wife, Monica and Brad and wife, Mandy; brother, Kenneth Leitner of Atwood; sister, Shirley Organ of Atwood; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Daniel Scheetz officiating. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood.
A parish vigil and K of C Rosary will be today at 7 p.m., at the church.
