BENKELMAN - Glen M. Osborn, 89, died Monday (Sept. 22, 2008) at Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.
He was born Jan. 1, 1919, in rural Dundy County to Orlando and Freda (Gunther) Osborn. His mother died when he was five years old and his father died five years later. His Uncle Ora and Aunt Agnes took him and his sisters in and cared for them.
When he was 16, he decided he wanted to farm. He found his planter sunk in a lagoon and a neighbor loaned him a horse so he could get his first crop planted.
In 1940, he married Vivian Bradley. He never talked much about his childhood until his granddaughter, Erin interviewed him for a college project. Following that he was interviewed on the NPR show "All Things Considered."
He was a member of the Benkelman United Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Elva and Edna; and granddaughter, April Osborn.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; son, Jim and wife, Lynne of Benkelman and their children; daughter, Glenda Campbell of Lincoln and her family; and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m., in Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with Marcine Farmer, PMA, officiating. Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing today from 5-7 p.m., at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman.
Memorials are being accepted in his name.
