Victory No. 100 for McCook High School football coach Jeff Gross did not come as easily as the 42-7 outcome would indicate friday night at Weiland Field.

The Bison gave up their first sack of the season, two interceptions and a fumble on the way.

But Gross, who is in his 11th season as Bison coach, said he's glad Scottsbluff made things tough for his team.

"You've got to give Scottsbluff credit for playing us tough," said Gross, whose team improved to 4-0. "It's a special win and I'll always remember it. In 11 years as coach, I never imagined this. Everyone bought into this program.

"I want to give credit to my parents for giving me the work ethic. Our players and coaches worked hard."

The Bison jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 37-yard touchdown run by Matt Berry at the 8:23 mark.

McCook scored three TDs in the second quarter. Zach Wieser broke about eight tackles on his way for a 59-yard TD run. Berry added a 3-yard run and Wieser tacked on a 5-yard run just before halftime.

Senior fullback Chris Schleeman, who rushed for 112 yards on 12 carries, broke loose for a 53-yard TD in the third quarter.

Andy Smith added a 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Lorentz connected on all seven extra point kicks.

Scottsbluff cracked the scoreboard on an 8-yard TD pass from backup quarterback Mike Klein with 2:14 left in the game. Tyler Gealy kicked the extra point for the final 42-7 margin.

McCook's defense stuffed the Bearcats. Scottsbluff rushed for 113 yards, but 50 yards came on a Klein run in the fourth quarter. Wieser intercepted a pass.

McCook's offense gained 16 first downs and 431 yards on 47 carries. Berry completed just two passes -- a 26-yarder to Ryan Hardin and a 9-yarder to Dillon Goltl.

In addition to Schleeman's 112 yards, Wieser rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries, Berry ran for 74 yards on 7 carries and Smith added 63 yards on 12 carries.

Nick Kenny made his one carry count, going for 40 yards. Brock Kotschwar had 11 yards rushing and Mike Grabowski 11.

Mike Klein, who backs up his brother Brett at quarterback, had 53 yards rushing. Gealy added 42. Trey Wilberger caught 1 pass for 11 yards.

Scottsbluff dropped to 1-3.

McCook will host Hastings next week. The Tigers defeated Seward 28-27.
